7. Intersection Design Study and Sketches: Netherlands and Sweden

I completed several intersection studies abroad by performing a 15-minute mode count to assess flow and design. I compiled this data visually by implementing icons from thenounproject.com. A key observation is the layering and thorough design of each intersection that allowed for consistent flow while also keeping all roads users safe. These intersections are more complex than many we see in the US, but their safety and efficiency shows that a four-way stop and a striped bike lane isn’t always enough. These intersections show that care went into their designs, and the mode count shows that it works– for everyone, not just cars.
